Bella Vida Bookworms

Bella Vida is partnering with the SCV Library to bring you a dynamic and friendly reading group. Each month the Bookworms will read a book provided by the SCV Library via eBook or paper edition. The Bookworms will then meet to discuss the drama, intrigue, suspense, adventure and romance that unfolded in the chapters.
For April, the Bookworms will read
The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See
This is a powerful historical novel that follows the friendship of two young women, Mi-ja and Young-sook, living on the Korean island of Jeju. Set against the backdrop of the island’s unique matriarchal society, the story spans decades, from the 1930s to the present day, capturing the resilience and struggles of the Haenyeo, the female divers who harvest seafood from the sea. As the two friends navigate life’s challenges, including love, loss, and the impact of political unrest, their bond is tested in profound ways. Through vivid storytelling, See explores themes of friendship, forgiveness, and the enduring strength of women in the face of adversity.
